Permanent Docks · SW Michigan

Permanent docks built to outlast Lake Michigan.

We design, engineer, and pile-drive permanent dock systems across St. Joseph, Bridgman, New Buffalo, and the inland lakes of Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph counties — built to handle ice, wind, and a century of waves.

What we do

What we build.

A permanent dock is a long-term investment in your shoreline. We build them three ways depending on your bottom conditions, water depth, and how you use the lake — pile-driven, crib, and steel-frame composite. Every system is engineered for Lake Michigan's specific challenges: ice push, wind-driven waves, and the seasonal rise-and-fall the inland lakes also see.

Captain's Choice handles the full process in-house — engineering, permitting through EGLE, pile driving with our own equipment, decking, and finish carpentry. No subcontractors, no scheduling games. The crew that quotes your project is the crew you'll see on site.

Pile-Driven Docks

Steel pipe pilings driven 8–14 feet into the lakebed for permanent installations on Lake Michigan and the deeper inland lakes. The most resilient option for high-energy shorelines.

Crib Docks

Heavy timber-frame crib boxes filled with stone — the traditional Michigan inland-lake choice. Period-appropriate for cottages, durable for decades.

Steel-Frame Composite

Modular steel substructure with composite decking — fast install, low maintenance, and the cleanest aesthetic for modern lakefront builds.

Frequently asked

Questions homeowners ask us.

How long does a permanent dock installation take?

From signed contract to first walk on your new dock, typical timelines run 4–10 weeks depending on EGLE permit turnaround. Pile driving itself usually takes 2–4 days, plus a week for decking and finish work.

Do I need a permit for a permanent dock on Lake Michigan?

Yes — Michigan EGLE requires a permit for any permanent dock on Lake Michigan and most inland lakes. We handle the entire permit process for you, including riparian rights documentation and DEQ submissions where required.

How much does a permanent dock cost in SW Michigan?

Most permanent residential docks across St. Joseph, Bridgman, and New Buffalo run between $25,000 and $80,000 depending on length, depth, decking material, and whether a boat lift is integrated. We provide line-item quotes so you know exactly where every dollar goes.

Will a permanent dock survive a Lake Michigan winter?

When engineered correctly for ice push, yes. Our pile-driven and steel-frame systems are designed to remain in place year-round. We also offer post-winter inspections every spring as part of our service.
